Choose Software for Both Writing and Formatting

Decide whether one app or a two-tool workflow fits your manuscript by testing revisions and both ebook and print outputs.

Where to start

Writing tools organize developing ideas; formatting tools turn approved content into a readable edition. Some products cover both, but the right choice depends on your manuscript's hardest feature. A plain novel, a footnoted guide and a coloring book should not use the same selection test.

Atticus documents writing, formatting and EPUB/PDF export. Scrivener emphasizes drafting organization and compilation. Reedsy Studio offers book writing and export. Start with the required output and then test how easy it is to revise the source after formatting.

Test the handoff before moving your book

  • Create a sample with headings, italics, a scene break and your most complicated real element.
  • Import or enter it, change a paragraph, reorder a chapter and export.
  • Inspect the files rather than relying on the editor preview.
  • Make a second correction in the source and export again. Check that you did not need to repair the same formatting manually twice.

A two-tool workflow can be simpler

If you already draft comfortably in a chapter-based editor, keep that source and use a formatter for publication editions. Set a clear handoff: final approved DOCX goes into the formatter; later text corrections go back into the master manuscript before re-export.

The dangerous arrangement is two independently edited masters. A correction made only in a print PDF can disappear from the next ebook. Record edition-specific layout changes separately from changes to the words.

Check your result

  • Your rarest required element survives export.
  • You know which file is the authoritative manuscript.
  • A later revision can be propagated without rebuilding the book from scratch.
