Choose a formatter by importing a realistic sample, making one revision and checking the files your readers will use.

Where to start
For a first book, prioritize a workflow you can repeat reliably over the largest feature list. The important question is whether you can produce and correct your particular edition without losing content. Test the most complicated page in your manuscript before moving everything.
Reedsy Studio, Atticus and Vellum are candidates for conventional book layouts; compare their supported platforms and exports with your needs. Vellum is a Mac application. Atticus documents Windows support. Reedsy Studio is browser-based. This is a shortlist for evaluation, not a hands-on ranking.
Use a ten-page trial manuscript
- Include a title page, two chapters, a scene break, italics and your hardest element, such as a table or footnote.
- Import the sample and inspect chapter recognition.
- Change one heading and one paragraph, then regenerate the contents and exports.
- Read the EPUB on a small screen and inspect the print PDF at actual size.
- Check the current purchase terms and whether the required export is included.
Test the exception, not just ordinary paragraphs
If your book has recipes, include a long ingredient list and a step that continues onto another page. If it has footnotes, follow one reference and return to the text. A formatter that handles your first five plain pages beautifully may still be unsuitable for the rest.
Write down every manual repair. If the same repair returns after each export, it belongs in the source styles or in a different workflow. An attractive template is valuable only if you can maintain it as the manuscript changes.
Check your result
- Your hardest element is readable in the exported files.
- A revision does not require rebuilding the entire layout.
- You know where editable backups live.
- Your computer and required formats are supported.
