Where to start
Start with why you want an alternative. If the problem is formatting, a different drafting assistant may not help. If the problem is developing the manuscript, a layout-only change may leave the real bottleneck untouched.
For book formatting, investigate Reedsy Studio or Vellum, with Vellum's Mac requirement in mind. For organizing a draft and research, consider Scrivener. For AI-assisted book creation, evaluate EarnDraft separately. These options overlap, but they are not interchangeable replacements for every Atticus feature.
Compare the task and the migration
- List the exact limitation you want to solve and the features you must retain.
- Export a copy of your manuscript and keep the original project untouched.
- Import representative chapters, including your hardest layout element.
- Make a correction and produce the required output formats.
- Compare current license terms, setup effort and recurring manual repair work.
An alternative must solve your actual problem
If you need a simpler conventional layout, test that layout in Reedsy Studio or Vellum. If you need to manage extensive notes before writing, Scrivener's organization may matter more. If you want help generating and revising content, use a separate drafting evaluation rather than assuming formatting software supplies it.
Create a migration checklist for chapter order, footnotes, emphasis, images and scene breaks. Do not delete the original project after a successful opening-page preview. Check the complete imported manuscript and retain a neutral export for recovery.
Check your result
- The new workflow fixes the named limitation.
- Required manuscript elements survive import and export.
- Platform compatibility is confirmed before purchase.
- The recommendation is based on your task, not a generic ranking.
