KDP AI disclosure: what authors must state

KDP requires publishers to inform Amazon when a new or republished book contains AI-generated text, images, or translations. It does not require disclosure when you created the content yourself and used AI only for brainstorming, editing, refinement, or error checking. KDP classifies content by who created the text, image, or translation that appears in the final book. AI-created material remains AI-generated even after substantial human editing. If you created the content and used AI only to improve it, the use is AI-assisted. No word-count threshold or amount of editing automatically changes a generated draft into assisted content.

The KDP requirement is to inform Amazon through its publishing workflow when the final book contains AI-generated text, images, or translations. A note to readers in the book or a marketplace description can be a separate editorial choice; it does not replace the KDP answer. Other stores may have their own rules, so check each one before listing the same files elsewhere.

1. Answer the KDP AI questions during title setup, before you submit for review.

3. Check the current listing policies of any other store where you publish.
4. Re-check answers whenever a new edition changes how the book was made.

KDP says it may reject or remove content that does not meet its content guidelines. Its public guidelines do not provide a separate penalty schedule for every inaccurate AI-content answer. The practical response is to review the actual uploaded book, answer accurately, and revisit the answer whenever you republish changed files.

If you choose to tell readers how the book was made, use words that describe the real process. An AI-drafted manuscript should not be described as merely “AI-assisted editing.” A short process note can explain what the tool generated and what a human verified, but it should not promise that the content is accurate simply because an editor reviewed it.
