Where to start
An ebook and a paperback can share text without sharing page design. A reflowable ebook responds to the screen and reader preferences. A paperback fixes the position of text on a physical page. Design each around how it will be read.
Make a format-specific checklist before exporting. This prevents print details from leaking into the ebook and ebook assumptions from leaving a print edition unfinished.
Separate content from layout decisions
- Keep wording, factual corrections and chapter order in the shared master.
- Use linked navigation for the ebook; verify pagination and running elements for print.
- Let ebook paragraphs reflow instead of aligning them with spaces or repeated returns.
- Check print image resolution and ebook image readability at small sizes separately.
- Treat the ebook front cover and the full print wrap as different production assets.
Replace format-dependent references
‘See the diagram on the facing page’ can work in one print layout and fail completely in an ebook. Prefer a figure label or a direct link that survives reflow, then check that the print reference still makes sense.
A deliberate blank page before a right-hand chapter opening may suit print but frustrate ebook readers. Likewise, a decorative chapter heading that looks balanced on a fixed page can dominate a phone screen. Review the same chapter in both editions and let the presentation differ while preserving the content.
Check your result
- No print headers interrupt the ebook text.
- Cross-references survive both formats.
- The print edition has intentional page breaks.
- Each edition has been reviewed independently after the last text correction.
