Where to start

Choose trim size from the reading task and production options. A portable text book, a workbook used on a desk and a coloring book place different demands on the page. A common size is a starting point, not proof that it fits your content.

Test two or three supported sizes with representative pages. Keep typography reasonably comparable so you can see what the size changes rather than confusing a smaller page with a completely different design.

Compare real pages

  • Select ordinary prose, the longest heading and the most demanding image or table.
  • Lay out those samples at candidate sizes using comfortable type and margins.
  • Print at actual size and hold the pages as a reader would.
  • Estimate the resulting page count and check the printer's available combinations.
  • Recheck the cover and inside margins after choosing the final size.

A workbook needs room to work

A compact page may look attractive for a guide, but an exercise with three written responses could become cramped. Enlarge the page, reduce the number of prompts per page or split the exercise. Shrinking all text to preserve the original page count usually transfers the problem to the reader.

For a novel, compare line length and physical handling. For a coloring book, test whether the intended tools can reach the spaces comfortably. Do not select a size only because it produces the lowest apparent page count; usability is part of the decision.

Check your result

  • The chosen size is supported for the intended print options.
  • Representative pages are comfortable at actual size.
  • Complex elements do not require tiny type.
  • The final page count is reflected in the cover setup.
