Where to start

Margins define usable space around the page; the inside edge must also account for the binding. Check how your layout software defines ‘gutter’: some tools add it to an inside margin, while others describe the total inside space differently. Entering the same allowance twice can distort the layout.

Meet the printer's minimum requirements, then judge the reading experience. Technical acceptance is not the same as comfortable access to words or artwork near the spine.

Inspect facing pages

  • Choose the final trim size and obtain the current printer requirements for your page count.
  • Set mirrored inside and outside margins for a bound book.
  • Confirm whether the software's gutter value is additional or already included.
  • Inspect headings, page numbers, captions and artwork, not only body paragraphs.
  • Recheck after substantial edits change page count, and review a physical proof.

Why centered text can look off-center

A text block centered on the physical page can appear too close to the binding when the book is opened. The inner portion is harder to see and reach. Increasing usable inside space may make the spread feel more balanced even though the block is no longer mathematically centered.

Use a dense page and a chapter opening as test cases. If the chapter number respects the margin but a decorative flourish crosses into the unsafe area, the page still needs attention. For coloring books, consider hand access as well as whether the outline technically fits.

Check your result

  • Inside margins alternate correctly on left and right pages.
  • Gutter space is not accidentally counted twice.
  • All important elements remain in the safe area.
  • The bound proof is comfortable to read or color.
