Where to start

Choose the supported trim size and print options before assembling the interior. The finished page size, the PDF page size and the area safe for important artwork are related but different. Decide whether artwork should reach the cut edge or sit inside a white border.

Use KDP's current specification for your page count and paper choice. A template from another book is not automatically suitable, particularly when its page count or bleed setting differs.

Set up and inspect a representative spread

  • Choose trim size and decide whether the artwork needs bleed.
  • Apply the destination's required PDF dimensions and inside/outside margins.
  • Keep important details away from the binding and trim zones.
  • Assemble single pages in reading order, including intentional blank backs.
  • Upload a draft to the print previewer, then inspect a physical proof before release.

A centered drawing is different from full bleed

If a garden illustration sits inside a generous white area, it may work as a no-bleed design. If leaves continue to the edge, the file needs the appropriate bleed setup. Merely stretching the centered image to fill the page can crop important details and reduce effective resolution.

On a left-hand page, the binding side is on the right; on a right-hand page it is on the left. Check the actual spread, not one isolated page. A drawing can fit the technical minimum and still be uncomfortable to color close to the spine.

Check your result

  • PDF dimensions match the selected print configuration.
  • Important artwork remains inside a comfortable safe area.
  • Intentional blank pages are present and correctly ordered.
  • The proof, not just the preview, has been reviewed.
