Where to start

There is no universal ideal page count. Decide how many distinct illustrations deliver your promise, then calculate the printed page count including front matter and blank backs. Buyers need an honest illustration count, not a large total padded with empty pages.

Single-sided artwork may be useful for the experience you intend, but it does not make paper immune to bleed-through. Test the actual printing method and describe the product accurately.

Build a page ledger

  • Count accepted, meaningfully different illustrations.
  • Decide whether each illustration has a blank reverse and how the first drawing aligns.
  • Add title, ownership, test or instruction pages only when they serve the reader.
  • Compare the resulting count with the printer's supported range and current cost calculator.
  • Review the whole sequence for repetition before adding more pages.

Calculate a hypothetical 30-design edition

Thirty illustrations with a blank reverse for each use 60 pages. Add four pages of front matter and the interior totals 64 pages. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommended length or a guarantee that a specific print option accepts it.

Check the sequence visually: a change to front matter can move the first illustration to the opposite side. Keep ‘30 illustrations’ distinct from ‘64 pages’ in the description. If five illustrations are nearly identical, replacing or removing them may improve value more than reaching a round number.

Check your result

  • Illustration count and PDF page count are both accurate.
  • Blank backs fall where intended.
  • The chosen print configuration accepts the final count.
  • Every added page has a reader-facing purpose.
