Where to start

A coloring-book cover should communicate theme and complexity quickly. Use artwork that represents the interior, a readable title and a clear visual hierarchy. An elaborate cover can mislead if the actual pages are much simpler or in a different style.

Distinguish a front-cover image from a full print wrap. A paperback wrap includes the back and spine, and its dimensions depend on the final production choices. Do not build it from an unrelated book's template.

Create the brief before decorating

  • State the audience, theme, detail level and the few words that must remain readable.
  • Choose one strong focal image instead of a collage of every page.
  • Try the cover at small listing size as well as full size.
  • For print, generate a fresh template using final page count, trim and paper settings.
  • Inspect text, barcode area, safe zones and the physical proof.

Show the activity honestly

A cover for ‘Quiet Garden Corners’ could feature a colored version of one actual interior scene with a small line-art detail. Keep the illustration's complexity recognizable. If you show colored artwork, make clear that the interior is intended for the buyer to color.

Test two title treatments by shrinking them to a typical thumbnail. A beautiful thin script may disappear against leaves. Simplify the background behind the title or use a stronger type treatment before adding outlines and effects that make it harder to read.

Check your result

  • The title is readable at thumbnail size.
  • Cover and interior promise the same kind of activity.
  • The wrap uses the final interior specifications.
  • All artwork and fonts have appropriate permissions for the intended use.
