Where to start
Start by deciding what the reader should understand or experience by the end. Give AI that goal, the intended audience, material you own and clear limits. Approve a small outline before asking for a manuscript; otherwise, you may spend your editing time repairing a book you never meant to write.
Keep a source manuscript and a decision log. AI suggestions are proposals until you accept them. For nonfiction, separate supplied facts from illustrative examples; for fiction, separate established events from possible plot changes.
Use five review points
- Brief: state the audience, promise, scope and subjects to leave out.
- Outline: give every chapter a distinct contribution and remove overlapping sections.
- Sample: draft one representative chapter and adjust voice before expanding.
- Manuscript: review each chapter against the outline, sources and earlier decisions.
- Publication: inspect the exported files and complete the destination's current requirements yourself.
An actionable first brief
Instead of ‘write a gardening book,’ try: ‘Help apartment renters grow three culinary herbs on a small balcony. Assume no gardening experience. Explain how to assess light before choosing plants. Use my attached experiment notes; mark missing evidence rather than inventing results.’
The first review should ask whether the proposed chapters deliver that promise. A chapter about buying farmland is out of scope even if it is well written. Resolve the mismatch before generating more pages.
Check your result
- Every chapter has a reason to exist.
- Numbers, quotations and sources have been checked outside the generated draft.
- You can identify which final text and artwork were generated when completing disclosure questions.
