Where to start

Start with the change the reader wants, then arrange the knowledge needed to make it. A list of everything you know about a topic is not yet a book structure. Each chapter should answer a necessary question and prepare the reader for what follows.

Choose a primary organizing principle: a sequence of actions, a developing argument, a chronology or a set of clearly distinct problems. Mixing them can work, but unexplained switches make readers rebuild their mental map.

Build a question-led outline

  • Write one sentence naming the audience and the result the book helps them achieve.
  • List the questions a beginner must answer before reaching that result.
  • Arrange prerequisite questions first; group questions that lead to the same decision.
  • Assign a concrete example and an evidence need to each chapter.
  • Remove chapters that repeat an earlier answer without adding a new application.

A six-chapter practical guide

For first-time balcony gardeners, a sequence could be: assess your space; choose suitable plants; select containers; establish a watering routine; diagnose common problems; plan the next season. Each chapter enables the next action. ‘The History of Gardening’ is optional unless the book's actual promise is historical.

Now write a one-line exit condition for each chapter. After chapter one, the reader has recorded usable space and observed light. After chapter three, they can explain their container choice. These conditions expose a beautiful outline that lacks practical substance.

Check your result

  • Prerequisites appear before instructions that depend on them.
  • Every chapter answers a different necessary question.
  • The conclusion delivers the opening promise without introducing a new book.
