Edit an AI-Generated Book in Separate Review Passes

Where to start

Begin with whether the book works, not whether the sentences are smooth. A copyedited chapter may still be irrelevant, unsupported or inconsistent with the rest of the manuscript. Separate review passes make different kinds of defects easier to see.

Preserve an original draft and a change log. If AI helps identify problems, verify its diagnosis before accepting edits. A convincing critique can misunderstand your intent, and a rewrite can silently remove an important qualification.

Use a deliberate editing order

• Structure: check the promise, chapter sequence, missing steps and repeated material.
• Evidence: verify quotations, numbers, dates and factual claims against original sources.
• Continuity: check terminology, names, timelines and examples across chapters.
• Language: improve clarity and voice while preserving meaning.
• Proof: inspect the exported edition for omissions, navigation and layout defects.

One sentence, several different checks

‘Everyone who used our method doubled their harvest’ needs evidence review before stylistic revision. Was it everyone or a small sample? Was harvest measured consistently? Was the method responsible, or did conditions also change? Rewriting it as an elegant sentence does not answer those questions.

For a hypothetical teaching example, say explicitly that the numbers are illustrative. For a real result, retain the population, period, measurement and limitations. After editing, compare the original data with the final passage; correct arithmetic can still support an overstated conclusion.

Check your result

• Every factual correction reaches all affected passages.
• Deleted text has not removed a prerequisite or caveat.
• No placeholders, invented citations or unresolved comments remain.
• The final review uses the files readers will receive.
