Where to start
Repetition can happen at three levels: the same phrase, the same paragraph pattern or the same idea repeated across chapters. Fix the largest level first. Replacing a repeated adjective does little when five chapters all deliver the same advice.
Some repetition helps readers remember a key concept. Keep it when the new passage applies the idea to a different problem; shorten it to a reminder when the explanation already exists.
Audit the manuscript in passes
- Summarize each chapter in one sentence and flag overlapping jobs.
- List examples and anecdotes to catch reused stories masquerading as new evidence.
- Read paragraph openings and endings in sequence to notice repeated rhetorical patterns.
- Search for conspicuous phrases, then inspect each match in context.
- Revise the relevant passage and check that the replacement has not introduced a new contradiction or repeated idea.
Repair repeated advice at its source
Suppose three chapters all explain ‘start small’ with the same balcony example. Put the full explanation where the first decision occurs. In later chapters, replace it with a specific application: choose one watering experiment, or change one container before replacing the whole setup.
An editing request can say: ‘Identify passages that repeat the same reasoning. Quote their locations and propose which one should remain. Do not rewrite yet.’ Reviewing that diagnosis gives you control over cuts. A global request to ‘vary the wording’ may preserve every redundant paragraph.
Check your result
- Recurring concepts advance rather than restart the argument.
- Cuts preserve definitions that later sections depend on.
- The revised text has been reread alongside its neighboring paragraphs.
