How do you sell ebooks on Amazon KDP?
KDP publishing is a checklist: files, cover, honest answers, price. Each step below — or draft the book with Free Ebook Generator.

Before you open the KDP tab
Three artifacts, finished first: a clean manuscript file (DOCX from a tidy source converts most reliably; KDP also accepts EPUB and PDF), a high-resolution cover JPEG with title text legible at thumbnail size, and your disclosure answers decided in advance.
Decide disclosure now, not mid-form: if AI generated any text, images, or translations in the book — even heavily edited afterward — the answer is yes. If AI only helped you brainstorm, edit, or proofread your own words, that is AI-assisted and disclosed differently. KDP's content guidelines hold you responsible for accuracy and rights either way.
Write the product description before the form too: who the book is for, what changes after reading, and three to five honest lines. The description field rewards clarity written calmly, not hype written at midnight.
Walking the KDP form, screen by screen
Create the title record first: title, subtitle, author name, and description. Choose categories and keywords by searching the Kindle store as a buyer — the categories where comparable books actually rank are your categories, not the ones that flatter the book.
Upload the manuscript and cover, then preview on KDP's own previewer across phone, tablet, and e-ink views. Click every table-of-contents entry, check chapter openings and image placement, and confirm no stray blank pages survived conversion. This preview is the last free chance to catch embarrassment.
Answer the AI-content questions honestly, set your price, pick the royalty option the price qualifies for, and submit. Then close the tab — checking the dashboard hourly does not speed review, and every first-timer learns this the hard way.
- Categories: where comparable books rank, not where yours sounds grand.
- Preview: all three device views, every TOC link clicked.
- Disclosure: yes for AI-generated content, even edited afterward.
Finish the book before the listing
Draft, cover, and files first — the KDP form takes an hour after that.
Pricing it right the first time
The 70% royalty band runs $2.99–$12.99 on Amazon.com at last check: price inside it and most sales in eligible territories earn 70% of list minus a small delivery deduction (about $3.45 on a $4.99 book). Outside the band, or in ineligible cases, the 35% option applies (about $1.75 on $4.99).
First-time short nonfiction usually lands $2.99–$9.99: cheap enough for impulse, high enough to signal the outcome is real. Our pricing walkthrough maps length to price, and the Gumroad comparison shows what the same book keeps elsewhere.
You can change the price later in minutes — so treat launch pricing as an experiment with a 30-day review date, not a marriage. The only pricing mistake that matters is one you refuse to revisit.
KDP Select or wide: the consequential checkbox
Enrolling in KDP Select puts the book in Kindle Unlimited — subscribers borrow, you earn page-read royalties from the global fund — plus promo tools like Free Book Promotions and Countdown Deals. The price is 90-day digital exclusivity to Amazon: no selling the ebook on Gumroad, Etsy, Apple, or your own site during the term.
Test Select when you have no audience: Amazon's borrow traffic is discovery you don't have to build, and one 90-day term with auto-renewal off is a cheap experiment. Our Unlimited strategy guide covers reading the page-read reports afterward.
Stay wide when the book feeds something bigger — a course, coaching, newsletter — because exclusivity bans the ebook from exactly the funnel pages where it earns most. Either way, re-decide every term with data, not loyalty.
After you hit publish
Week one jobs: verify the live listing on multiple devices, buy or borrow your own copy to check the real file, fix anything the previewer hid, and point your live book page and social profiles at the listing. Early errors fixed fast never become one-star reviews.
Then drive the first readers deliberately: your list, your communities, launch pricing, and honest requests for reviews from people who actually read it. Amazon's algorithms notice velocity and conversion — ten real readers in week one beat a hundred promised someday-readers.
Honest-scope note: this guide covers standard reflowable nonfiction on KDP — guides, lead magnets, short paid reads. Print editions, translations, and audiobooks are separate crafts with their own checklists; ship the ebook first and expand with earnings.
Manuscript prep that prevents rejection
Most KDP rejections trace to the file, not the content: pasted-in formatting from web pages and old documents, stacked empty paragraphs instead of real chapter breaks, and images floating outside the text flow. Strip the manuscript to semantic structure first — real heading styles, body text, lists — then style sparingly.
Front matter order matters: cover, title page, copyright (with your process note if you keep one), contents, then chapter one. Back matter closes the sale: a conclusion pointing at one next step, a resources page with every link mentioned, and a polite review request placed after value delivered — never before.
Images need captions, centering, and simplicity: complex floating layouts reflow unpredictably on e-ink, and diagrams unreadable at the smallest preview size should be split or cut. Test every image small, not full-screen — Kindle readers won't pinch-to-zoom your workbook.
Run the final manuscript through a spell-check plus one human read of the converted preview, not just the source file: conversion surfaces duplicated headings, swallowed characters, and pagination surprises invisible in the editor. The previewer is quality control, not a formality — our formatting checklist covers the full pass.
Keep the clean DOCX as your eternal source file even when you also ship PDF: future editions, print layouts, and wide-distribution uploads all start from text, and rebuilding from a converted file wastes the weekend the second edition should take.
Description, categories, and keywords that place the book
Write the description for scanners: first line names the reader and outcome, the middle lines list what changes chapter by chapter, and the close states who the book is not for. candor converts — readers who self-select out were refunds waiting to happen.
Choose categories by buyer behavior: search the store for your topic, note where comparable books rank in the top hundred, and pick those shelves over grander ones dominated by giants. A visible book in a small category outsells an invisible one in a large category without exception.
Fill keyword slots with reader phrasing harvested from autocomplete, community questions, and competing reviews — the words buyers type when they feel the problem. Seven slots of reader language beat seven slots of author synonyms; match the search, then earn the click with the cover.
Revisit all three quarterly with a buyer's eyes: categories reshuffle, competitors move, and accumulated reviews reposition the book. Fifteen minutes a quarter keeps the listing where its readers browse — placement is maintenance, not setup.
Honest-scope note: nobody outside Amazon knows the full ranking algorithm, and certainty for sale is guessing for money. Placement plus cover plus reviews is the known game; everything else is forum folklore until your own data says otherwise.
- Description: reader, outcome, chapters, honest exclusion.
- Categories: where comparables rank, not where yours sounds grand.
- Keywords: buyer phrasing, refreshed quarterly.
After the ebook: print and going wide
Once the ebook sells steadily, print becomes the expansion funded by earnings: paperback reuse of the manuscript needs print formatting the ebook never did — real margins, bleed, trim sizes, and page numbers that matter on paper. Start it with royalties, not savings, and only after reviews confirm the content earns its paper.
Going wide means carrying the ebook beyond Amazon when readers exist elsewhere: direct pages stay for margin and emails, and additional retailers enter only if your buyers shop there. Each new shelf needs its own cover-size check and description pass — small scheduled work, never launch-week chaos.
Mind the exclusivity constraint throughout: KDP Select enrollment bans other digital shelves for the term, so schedule wide expansion for term breaks with auto-renewal deliberately managed. The calendar, not enthusiasm, decides when exclusivity ends.
Translations and audiobooks sit a full stage beyond print: separate crafts with their own quality bars, worth attempting only when the English ebook's demand is proven and the budget comes from its earnings. Expand in the order readers request, funded by the evidence each stage creates.
The ordering principle never changes: prove demand on one shelf before multiplying shelves. Every additional format multiplies maintenance — price syncs, review monitoring, file updates — worthwhile for a proven book and pure overhead for an unproven one.
Honest-scope note: print layout, translation quality control, and audiobook production each deserve their own guides. This page gets the ebook earning; expansions ride on its evidence, in reader-requested order, on earned money.
Troubleshooting rejection and launch errors
Rejection emails name the category, rarely the fix: content-guideline flags usually trace to metadata overpromising (cure, guarantee, bestseller language in titles or descriptions), while formatting flags trace to the file issues our manuscript section covers. Fix the likely cause, resubmit calmly — most first rejections resolve in one round.
Disclosure answers trigger the most anxious rejections: if flagged on AI content, re-check that your answers match the actual production — AI-generated text or images disclosed as such, assisted-only work answered accordingly — and correct honestly rather than minimizing. KDP's content guidelines punish inaccurate answers far more than affirmative ones.
Live-listing errors have a triage order: wrong file (re-upload and verify on devices), wrong price or territory (check royalty band and list-price requirements), missing categories (re-edit metadata). Fix files first — readers forgive metadata quirks, never corrupted downloads.
Reviews pointing at real errors need the maintenance loop, not defensiveness: verify, fix the file, update the edition note, thank the reporter. Our accuracy workflow covers prevention; this paragraph covers cure — both beat arguing with a reader holding evidence.
Keep a launch log of every issue and fix: rejection reasons, file versions, metadata changes with dates. Patterns across books become your personal publishing checklist, and the log turns each launch's friction into the next launch's smooth — experience only compounds when written down.
When truly stuck, use official channels in order: KDP's help pages for the rule as written, then KDP support for your specific case. Forums offer speed and folklore in equal measure — confirm anything consequential against the source before acting on it.
