Should you put your ebook in Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited pays per page read — great for some short ebooks, a trap for others. Here is the decision, or start with Free Ebook Generator.

How Kindle Unlimited actually works

Kindle Unlimited is a reader subscription: subscribers borrow enrolled books and read free while authors get paid from a shared fund per page read. Enrollment happens through KDP Select, in 90-day terms, and requires Amazon exclusivity for the ebook edition.

That last clause is the whole strategy question. Unlimited gives you discovery inside Amazon's ecosystem — borrow-friendly readers, page-read income, promotional tools — in exchange for giving up every other storefront for the term.

When going exclusive wins

Exclusivity tends to win for short, bingeable nonfiction: focused how-tos, workbooks, and guides readers finish in one or two sittings. High completion means more of your pages get read — and page reads are what pay.

It also wins when you have no audience yet. Amazon's borrow traffic is discovery you don't have to build yourself, and the 90-day term is a cheap experiment: enroll, watch the page-read reports, decide with data.

When selling wide wins

Go wide when the book feeds something bigger: a course, coaching, or newsletter where the ebook is the entry point. Exclusivity forbids selling the same ebook on your own site — exactly where your funnel needs it.

Wide also wins for lead magnets and tripwires by definition: a free download that builds your list cannot live behind exclusivity. Our Etsy vs Gumroad walkthrough covers where direct sellers start.

  • Book feeds a course or list: stay wide.
  • No audience, standalone short read: test exclusive.
  • Either way: re-decide every 90 days with real numbers.

The 90-day test, step by step

Enroll for one term with auto-renewal off. Track borrows versus sales, completion-proxy page reads, and whether readers follow your back-matter call to action. One term of real data beats any amount of forum advice.

Note the boundary: this strategy covers distribution, not production. Unlimited doesn't change what your book needs — a clear promise, a clean file, honest disclosure. Build that first with Free Ebook Generator, then pick your shelf.
