Where to start

Choose software around the work you need to finish: planning, drafting, revising or producing book files. A fluent sample paragraph cannot tell you whether an app will keep a manuscript manageable. Start with a shortlist and give every candidate the same material.

Sudowrite presents fiction-focused drafting and revision tools. Novelcrafter organizes story information in a Codex. Atticus emphasizes writing and formatting. EarnDraft combines a conversation with an editable book. These are different starting points, not evidence that one produces better prose.

Run a two-chapter comparison

  • Prepare one outline, a short sample of your own writing and five facts the draft must preserve.
  • Draft two connected chapters. Save the original outputs before making corrections.
  • Change one fact in the first chapter and ask for the dependent passages to be revised. Check every occurrence yourself.
  • Export the result. Record missing content, formatting repairs, manual editing time and the actual charge or credit use.

A continuity test you can reuse

For a mystery, establish that Mara cannot drive and the bridge closes at dusk. The second chapter requires her to cross town after sunset. A useful draft must respect both constraints or explain a credible change. Elegant prose that has her drive across the closed bridge fails this particular test.

Score each requirement as met, partly met or missed, with a passage or file as evidence. Keep prose preference separate from factual continuity. Repeat a weak result once before assuming it represents the tool consistently.

Check your result

  • Can you recover an earlier draft and edit the saved manuscript?
  • Does the exported file preserve chapters, emphasis and navigation?
  • Did you compare the total workflow cost, including any separate model bill?
