Where to start

AI-generated coloring illustrations fall under KDP's image disclosure requirement. Editing a generated image does not remove that classification. Check the cover as well as the interior, and review any generated text or translation separately.

Keep the asset record with the final book. A mixed workflow can include hand-drawn pages, generated backgrounds and edited illustrations; a single vague note saying ‘used AI’ is less useful than knowing how each accepted asset was made.

Build an asset-by-asset record

  • Give every accepted illustration a filename and final page location.
  • Record whether it was drawn, licensed, generated or edited from a generated source.
  • Keep the source and revision history for replaced images.
  • Include cover artwork, decorative images and any generated written material.
  • Compare the record with the final PDF before completing the submission form.

A repaired page keeps its history

Suppose AI creates a woodland scene and you redraw a malformed watering can by hand. The correction improves the page, but the accepted scene still began as generated artwork. Record both the generation and repair rather than relabeling the whole image as hand-drawn.

If you later replace that scene with an original drawing, update the record and confirm the new file is the one in the exported book. Keep listing language truthful too: do not describe a generated collection as entirely hand-drawn. The asset ledger supports both accurate submission and accurate customer expectations.

Check your result

  • Cover and interior assets are both included.
  • The ledger matches the final exported version.
  • Marketing descriptions agree with the production process.
  • Disclosure and artwork-quality review are treated as separate tasks.
