Why sell ebooks on Shopify?

Marketplaces rent you traffic; Shopify rents you a storefront. On Etsy or Amazon you play by their search rules and pay per-sale fees, but buyers arrive on their own. On Shopify you keep control of pricing, bundling, and — biggest of all — the customer email list, in exchange for driving your own traffic and paying a monthly plan whether you sell one copy or one thousand.

That trade favors authors who already have an audience: newsletter readers, social followers, podcast listeners. If nobody knows your name yet, read our Etsy and Gumroad guide first and treat Shopify as step two, once you have buyers to bring with you.

Set up the store in an afternoon

A one-book store needs almost nothing: an account, a free theme, one product, and a way to take payment. Resist the urge to build a brand universe before your first sale — a clean single-product page outsells a sprawling empty shop.

  1. Start a trial on the Basic plan and pick a free theme.
  2. Connect Shopify Payments (or PayPal) so checkout works end to end.
  3. Create one product per book: title, cover image, outcome-led description.
  4. Attach the PDF through the Digital Products app (next section).
  5. Place a test order before you share the link anywhere.

Deliver the files automatically

Shopify handles physical shipping natively, but digital delivery comes from Shopify's own free Digital Products app: it attaches files to a product, emails the buyer a download link after checkout, and lets you set download limits. Install it, upload your EarnDraft PDF, and set a sane limit (a handful of downloads stops casual link-sharing without punishing honest buyers who lose a file).

Sell the PDF as the core product and consider the DOCX or a printable workbook as a higher-priced bundle tier — two price points from files you already have.

What Shopify actually costs

Two charges stack: the monthly plan and card processing on every sale. Plan prices move, so treat these as orientation, not a quote — but the shape is stable: a flat monthly fee plus a percentage-plus-cents cut of each order.

PlanMonthly priceCard rate from
Basic$29/mo2.9% + 30¢
Grow$79/mo2.7% + 30¢
Advanced$299/mo2.5% + 30¢

Figures checked September 2026 on shopify.com/pricing — re-check before you budget, since Shopify changes plans. A back-of-the-envelope rule: Basic costs you roughly one ebook sale per month in fixed fees, so it pays for itself fast once your list sends any real traffic.

A product page that sells books

Nobody buys a PDF — they buy the outcome inside it. Open with the transformation (“plan a week of dinners in one hour”), show two to four real interior page previews so buyers trust the goods, and state format and page count plainly. Vague luxury copy (“unlock your potential”) converts nobody.

  • Headline: reader + outcome, not the book's title alone.
  • Preview images: cover mockup plus actual interior pages.
  • Details block: format (PDF), page count, what's inside, refund terms.
  • One review or testimonial beats five feature bullets — borrow from early readers.

EarnDraft doesn't sell books on-platform — your live book page is a preview hub, not a checkout. That makes the pairing clean: the book page is the free, always-on destination readers find through search and sharing, and your Shopify product page is where money changes hands. Link them both ways. The book page's buy button points at Shopify; the Shopify page links back to the book page for the full preview.

Put the same cover, title, and price on both so buyers recognize the book instantly — and if you also list on Etsy or Amazon, keep that price consistent too. Nothing kills trust like finding the same book cheaper one click away.

Mistakes first-time sellers make

  • Paying for apps and a custom theme before the first sale — start free and plain.
  • Skipping the test order, then learning checkout is broken from an angry buyer.
  • No email capture: every buyer should join your list at checkout for book two.
  • Launching the store with no traffic plan — a shop nobody visits sells nothing.
  • Hiding the refund policy. State it plainly; a clear guarantee outsells fine print.
