Which marketplace fits your ebook?

Etsy is a search marketplace: buyers arrive hunting (“meal prep guide pdf”) and compare listings side by side. Gumroad is a follow marketplace: buyers arrive from your link and decide in seconds. Many sellers list on both — Etsy for discovery, Gumroad for the audience they already own.

What files buyers expect

Marketplace buyers expect instant, clean downloads. A readable PDF is non-negotiable; a DOCX or printable worksheet alongside it reads as a bonus that justifies the price. Build both from the start with the ebook maker so you never re-export under pressure.

  • Main file: clean PDF with title page, contents, and page numbers.
  • Bonus (optional): DOCX master or one-page printable worksheet.
  • Test-download every file on a second device before listing.
  • File name includes the title — “download.pdf” looks careless.

Write a listing that sells

Good listings answer four questions in order: what outcome, what exactly is included, what format, and who it is for. Write the description before you touch titles and tags — clips from it become both.

  1. Open with the outcome in one line (“Plan a week of dinners in 20 minutes”).
  2. List contents plainly: chapters, page count, format, bonuses.
  3. State who it is for — and who should skip it.
  4. Close with delivery: instant download, what they click, where to get help.

Price your first ebook

Price to the niche, not to your effort. A first short guide usually sells best at an everyday-guide price — low enough to buy on impulse, high enough to signal it works. You can raise it once reviews arrive. If you are unsure what the niche bears, the niches guide's validation pass shows how to read competing listings.

  • Under-priced: signals “blog post with a cover” — avoid.
  • Everyday-guide range: the sweet spot for 20–60 page practical ebooks.
  • Premium: only with proof (reviews, audience, or a workbook + templates bundle).
  • Launch discount: fine for week one; return to full price loudly.

Mockups and previews that earn clicks

On Etsy your thumbnails compete in a grid; on Gumroad your cover competes with the back button. Show the real interior — two or three page spreads prove the goods better than any adjective. Keep text on mockups large enough to read at thumbnail size.

  • Image 1: cover mockup, title readable at grid size.
  • Images 2–3: real interior spreads (contents page + a strong chapter).
  • Image 4: “what you get” summary card (format, pages, bonus).
  • Never use stock pages from another book — buyers notice on page one.

Writing a how-to to sell?

Structured steps buyers can follow

After the first sale

The first sale is a test result, not a verdict. Message the buyer (both platforms allow it), ask what nearly stopped them, and fold the answer into the listing. Then write the second book — sellers with three related titles outsell one-hit shops because every listing advertises the others.

Scope note: this guide covers listings and files. Paid ads, affiliate programs, and audiobook editions are separate disciplines — win the organic listing first.
