What makes a lead magnet convert?

Most lead magnets fail before page one: vague promise, bloated length, no next step. Here is the anatomy of one that converts — build yours with our Lead Magnet Generator.

One promise, stated on the cover

Converting lead magnets promise exactly one outcome to exactly one reader. “The 7-email welcome sequence for coaches” beats “The ultimate marketing guide” because the right person recognizes themselves instantly — and everyone else self-selects out, which is the point.

Write the promise as the working title before you write anything else. If it needs a subtitle to explain it, narrow it until it doesn't.

A fast win in the first five pages

The reader decided to trust you with their email; repay it fast. The best lead magnets deliver something usable — a checklist completed, a script copied, a decision made — within the first few pages. That early win is what gets the rest read.

Structure the whole magnet around that win: name it in the introduction, deliver it by chapter two, then spend the remaining chapters making sure it sticks.

  • Chapter 1: the problem, in the reader's own words.
  • Chapter 2: the win — a usable result, fast.
  • Chapters 3–5: depth, proof, and the natural next step.

Make a lead magnet people finish

One idea in, finished download-ready magnet out — free to start.

Short enough to finish in one sitting

Completion is the conversion metric nobody tracks. A 15-page magnet that gets finished — and ends with your call to action — outperforms a 60-page guide that dies in the downloads folder. If a section doesn't serve the one promise, cut it or save it for the paid product.

Five focused chapters is the sweet spot: enough to feel substantial, short enough to finish over coffee. It is also exactly the shape EarnDraft drafts produce.

One next step, not five

Every converting lead magnet ends by pointing at exactly one door: book a call, buy the guide, join the list segment, start the trial. Five links at the end is the same as no link — decision paralysis kills the conversion you just earned.

Write the final page first, right after the title. If you know where the magnet must land, every chapter on the way there writes itself.
