Where to start
Many first-book problems occur between finishing the draft and releasing the files. The manuscript changes, the cover uses an old title, the wrong PDF is uploaded or the description promises a different book. A simple release process catches these coordination errors.
Treat publication as a sequence of checked decisions. Do not use a launch date to excuse unresolved content or production defects. At the same time, avoid endless polishing by defining which issues actually block release.
Prevent five common handoff failures
- One master: keep text corrections in a single authoritative manuscript.
- Honest promise: compare title, description and sample with the complete book.
- Real proof: inspect exported files and, for print, a physical copy.
- Prepared listing: draft metadata and descriptions before entering the upload form.
- Version record: record the exact release filenames and retain a backup.
A last-minute subtitle change spreads
You shorten the subtitle in the manuscript but forget the cover image, copyright page and listing draft. The result is a mismatched product even though each item looks polished in isolation. Put canonical title, subtitle and author name in the release checklist and compare all assets against them.
Another preventable mistake is checking only the first chapter. Review the final chapter, the longest table, the most detailed illustration and any special characters. These are likely places for omissions or layout failures to hide. After fixing them, inspect the new export rather than assuming the repair transferred.
Check your result
- All release assets use consistent identifying information.
- No unresolved blocker is hidden behind a deadline.
- The sample represents the actual content.
- A correction can be reproduced from the retained source.
