Where to start
The cost depends on the manuscript, the editions and which work you do yourself. Build a budget from required outcomes rather than copying another author's total. A short text ebook and an illustrated print book have different production needs.
Separate one-time preparation costs, recurring services and per-copy expenses. Keep optional promotion outside the minimum production budget so you can see what is required to release a sound book and what is an experiment in reaching readers.
Request comparable estimates
- Define manuscript length, genre, editing scope and the condition of the draft.
- List cover, illustration, formatting and proof requirements for each edition.
- Ask providers what is included, how many revisions are covered and which source files you receive.
- Add current platform and printing costs from the relevant official calculators or terms.
- Keep a contingency line and a maximum amount you can spend without depending on future sales.
Use a hypothetical budget correctly
Suppose your own estimates are 500 for editing, 200 for a cover, 100 for formatting and 50 for proofs, all in the same currency. The planned production total is 850 before taxes, additional revisions or promotion. These are illustrative inputs, not market-rate claims.
If a copy contributes 3 after the costs you included, recovering 850 would require 284 copies after rounding up. That arithmetic is not a sales forecast and changes when costs or receipts change. Keep time spent on self-editing visible even when it does not produce a cash invoice.
Check your result
- Quotes describe the same scope before you compare them.
- Currency, tax treatment and recurring charges are explicit.
- The budget includes actual proof and correction work.
- You can proceed without assuming a promised sales result.
