Where to start
Clean line art needs readable contours at the final printed size. Start with a sufficiently detailed source, use deliberate line weights and remove artifacts without erasing useful shapes. A high-resolution file can still contain a poor drawing; a low-resolution one can look fine only while displayed small.
Work from the original artwork whenever possible. Repeated screenshots and compressed exports can introduce gray halos and jagged edges. Keep a master and make publication copies from it.
Inspect lines before assembly
- Set the final physical size, then calculate effective pixels per inch from the image dimensions.
- Look for gray backgrounds, compression blocks, doubled contours and isolated specks.
- Adjust contrast cautiously; aggressive thresholding can close small gaps or remove thin lines.
- Redraw damaged contours rather than expecting sharpening to restore missing information.
- Print at 100% scale and inspect both large shapes and the smallest intended details.
Resolution is a size relationship
A 1,800-pixel-wide image placed six inches wide has 300 pixels per inch. The same image placed nine inches wide has 200. Changing a metadata field to ‘300 DPI’ does not add the missing detail. Check the printer's actual submission requirements for the chosen output.
A contour that looks pleasantly delicate on a bright display may print faintly. Conversely, thickening every line can turn narrow petals into black wedges. Test a representative page containing both broad shapes and fine details before applying an adjustment to the whole book.
Check your result
- There is no unwanted background tint.
- Thin contours survive printing and small spaces remain usable.
- The exported PDF does not downsample the artwork unexpectedly.
