Keep AI-Written Characters Consistent With a Ledger

Track character facts, knowledge and change across scenes so an AI-assisted story stays coherent.

Where to start

A character profile describes who someone is; a continuity ledger records what has happened to them and what they know now. Long stories need both. A model can reproduce a character's appearance while giving them knowledge they have not acquired.

Treat established facts as constraints and proposed changes as proposals. Do not let an automatic summary quietly turn a rejected suggestion into story canon.

Track state at scene boundaries

  • Record stable facts such as identity, relationships and relevant physical constraints.
  • Track changing facts: location, injuries, possessions, knowledge, goals and trust.
  • After accepting a scene, add only the changes that actually occurred, with a chapter reference.
  • Before drafting the next scene, supply the relevant state and viewpoint limits.
  • Review contradictions explicitly instead of asking whether the scene is generally good.

Knowledge is not shared automatically

In chapter two, Mara sees the stolen key in a drawer while Ivo waits outside. In chapter three, Ivo cannot identify the drawer unless Mara tells him or he obtains the information another way. The ledger should distinguish ‘key location known to Mara’ from ‘key location known to the group.’

A later revelation may legitimately change that state. Record the scene that causes the change rather than editing the earlier entry until the timeline becomes ambiguous. Character growth is consistent when its causes are visible; consistency does not mean nobody changes.

Check your result

  • Each viewpoint knows only what the story has established.
  • Injuries, objects and locations carry forward correctly.
  • Rejected plot alternatives are excluded from the ledger.
  • Changes in motivation have an observable cause.
