Turn a Manuscript Into EPUB Without Losing Structure

Where to start

Export from the editable manuscript whenever possible. A PDF describes positioned pages; an EPUB needs reading order, headings and navigation. Converting a PDF can carry its line breaks and page furniture into the ebook, creating repair work that a clean source avoids.

For ordinary text books, choose a reflowable edition so readers can adjust type size. A layout-dependent book may need a different approach. Decide that before conversion rather than forcing every page into a single image.

Prepare, export, validate, read

• Apply real heading styles and remove manual spaces used for alignment.
• Resolve tracked changes and comments in a publication copy; retain your editorial master separately.
• Use an EPUB-capable exporter and check title, author, cover and chapter order.
• Run EPUBCheck for structural errors, then read the file in the destination's previewer and another reading app.

Why an apparently good conversion fails

A chapter heading made with bold body text can look right in the source while being absent from navigation. Mark it as a heading and regenerate the navigation through the exporter. Likewise, a forced line break after every printed line makes text look broken when the reader enlarges the font.

Test a long paragraph, a chapter boundary and an image caption at the largest comfortable text size. The goal is readable reflow, not matching the source document's exact page count. An EPUB's displayed pages can change with the device and reader settings.

Check your result

• Every navigation entry reaches the correct chapter.
• Images and captions stay understandable on a phone.
• No running headers or print page numbers interrupt paragraphs.
• Structural validation and visual reading both pass.
